Surrey Hills Historical Society conducts tours of the Box Hill Cemetery in conjunction with the Box Hills Historical Society. There are 4-5 joint tours each year, one of which coincides with the Whitehorse Heritage Week in September. The tours may be held to coincide with International Women’s Day, Anzac or Remembrance Day, Victoria Day or focused around a particular theme, such as health and medicine, pioneers, or artists and writers.
Tours are generally held on a Sunday afternoon and last approximately 2 hours. The cost is $20 per person ($15 for SHHS and BHHS members). We try to limit groups to 20 people; group bookings for clubs or associations or similar groups can be arranged on request.
The meeting place is outside the Cemetery Office in the centre of the Cemetery grounds. Please arrive about 10 minutes before the scheduled start time.
Participants are advised that some of the paths in the cemetery are uneven and to wear appropriate shoes. Please bring your own water and be mindful of the weather conditions.
The cemetery is located at 395 Middleborough Road, Box Hill. Parking within the cemetery is limited on weekdays and the vehicle access gates are closed on weekends. External parking is available in Reserve Road or Whitehorse Reserve - with access to the cemetery across the footbridge. There are a total of five pedestrian entry gates.
Tours of the cemetery are advertised in on our website, on our Facebook page. Similarly they are advertised on the BHHS website and Facebook page.
If you would like to go on a mailing list to be informed of our next cemetery tour, please email us on shhistory@gmail.com.
The types of assistance that we can provide include Family, House, Club, and Business Histories. We can also supply digital copies of photographs in our collection.
Individuals with family and local history enquiries should also look at the list of resources on this website. There are many useful on-line sources of information. In particular, we have access to Ancestry.com.au.
Original research is undertaken for articles published in our newsletters and for presentation at meetings on local topics.
We undertake simple queries without charge, however if your query is more complex, our volunteers can search the collection and online resources for you on a fee-for service basis.
The cost of these research enquiries for private individuals is calculated at $25 per hour or part thereof. Research can be emailed or posted to you. There may be additional costs for printing and postage. The cost for research for commercial use is by negotiation. There is a discount for research undertaken by our Members.
Alternatively, you can join us when we are open and we can assist you to access the collection.
Our researchers are volunteers, and all research fees received are used for ongoing care and development of the collection.
If we can help you with your own research please contact us via the button below
