The Society aims to collect, preserve and disseminate information about the history and heritage of Surrey Hills and Mont Albert in postcode 3127 for future generations, and to promote these local communities.
This is achieved through regular meetings, newsletters and maintenance of archival collections, comprised of photos and documents, and a small reference library. Other activities include local guided walks, cemetery tours, a Facebook page, activities during relevant community celebrations including Seniors Week and History Week and occasional exhibitions. We actively respond to research requests from the general community, community organisations, university students, school students and others. Research enquiries relate to house histories, family history, sporting club and associations, church and school histories and background for the local ANZAC Day Dawn Service.
For many years, we were located at and auspiced by the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre. From 2024, the Society is located in the Heritage Centre of the Canterbury Community Precinct. This space is shared with Canterbury History Group.
The Society is a member of a number of organisations, including:
The Society became an Incorporated Association registered with the Department of Consumer Affairs, Victoria in 2022 and has adopted Rules based on the Model Rules for Incorporated Associations. A copy of the Rules is available here.
A copy of our Annual Report for 2022 can be found here.
Membership is on a calendar year basis and costs $25 pa for a single membership and $35 pa for a family membership, (includes entrance to regular meetings, discount to other Society events, and newsletters). We also have a Newsletter only membership for $15 pa (meetings and discounts not included).

The Surrey Hills Historical Society acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung people of the Kulin nation as the Traditional Owners and original custodians of the land on which we meet. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present.
