Over the past few months, members of the Canterbury History Group and the Surrey Hills Historical Society have been researching the social history of weddings, the traditions behind them and the changes that can be seen over time. Why the white dress? And why were orange blossoms so commonly used in bouquets, buttonholes and bridal coronets?
This exhibition draws upon material held in our collections and within the local community. It includes dresses from the late 1890’s up until today, over 50 wedding photos, memorabilia including accessories, cards and wedding invitations, over 1000 local marriage announcements and newspaper reports and individual’s stories.
